These days, it is a tiny 2.5-acre vineyard on a 200-acre conservation easement, preserving it as a haven for wildlife. Like all plots of land, this Oakville property has its own story and is part of a much larger one. A wild, undulating expanse that snakes into the folds of Hopper Creek Canyon, it passed through the hands of the early settler Charles Hopper, to the Kelham family, and finally to the current-day owners. M Bar Ranch’s wilderness has always dwarfed its cultivated acres, though the grapes grown here bolstered many historic Napa bottlings over the years. Its scale suits us wonderfully, and we are thrilled to honor its history by returning to a single-site expression of cabernet.

14. The Relationship

The literal and woefully inadequate translation of Kodō is ‘heartbeat’. For us, it is something closer to ‘beating heart’ or perhaps even ‘life force’. An introduction by long-time friends and mentors, the Araujos brought us to this scant two-and-a-half-acre site in southern Oakville that pulses with the deafening thump, thump, thump of generations and civilizations before us.
A demure two and half acres of cabernet sauvignon vines sit ornately before Hopper’s pre-Victorian home, cresting a knoll rich in organic matter, and fed by Hopper Creek.
